The ridge in the wall

Chapter 1

Somewhere in the Ivanil wadi a 16 year-old girl was staring at a mountain. The damp wind blew Sabrine’s hair into her face. She brushed it out of the way and went back to her thoughts; a ridge in the wall. It's like a secret door of some sort. All around there are holes in the mountains but they don't seem random; people say that they are homes for animals but all the holes make me think there is something inside the heart of the mountain. I wonder if this is a secret entrance, it baffles me how no one else has thought about this. Why do they all think this is crazy? I just hope I can solve this seemingly endless riddle. Sabrine sighed and went back to her tent.

Sabrine woke early and listened to the birds sing and let the sounds of nature wash over her. Her peaceful moment was broken but the sound of her phone. “Hello?” “Hi, Sabrine! Did I wake you?” “No you didn’t wake me Kevin. So what did you call about?” “Well, I know you want to study some dents in the mountains but I think you’ve been looking at those things for long enough." “Dents!! Kevin!! I am studying the odd carvings and shapes in the mountains! And besides we are meeting this Friday then going home. But you know that so why did you call?” “Alright, alright I didn’t call about that it’s just… stuff doesn’t feel right and I wanted to talk to someone.” Sabrine smiled. “Ok, well how about I meet you tomorrow! I travel to the half-way point of the valley and you too and we can meet there!” “You always know a compromise!” they ended the call and Sabrine gathered her things and began to pack. She wanted to move quickly so she could come back and find out what the thing is. Then a thought struck her. What if I bring Kevin with me! I will have more fun, I can see more things and all I have to do is convince his dad to let him! She texted Kevin telling him the plan and he was over-joyed and his dad had agreed. The same day the friends met near the entrance to the wadi and began their hike to the site Sabrine was at. “So, you’re telling me that you think someone made a door in a mountain and covered it up?” “Yes Kevin that’s what I’m saying. Now look we’re almost there.” At first glance you wouldn’t see anything out of place but then under a ledge you see a step-like pattern carved into the side of the mountain and it is large enough for and adult to pass through. “Well you don’t see that every-day!” Kevin commented. They set up camp as it was falling dark.
They sat near their fire talking when they spotted another light. They soon found a girl with brown hair who was leaning against a rock and she looked as if she’d seen a ghost. “Are you alright? Why are you out here?” at first Sabrine got no response then the girl replied “I-I’m okay, I was j-just looking for a door.” confused Kevin asked “What kind of door? There aren’t any ‘round here…” “The kind that leads to a secret place and isn’t easy to find.” The two friends exchanged looks and Sabrine asked “What’s your name? You can stay with us for now.” “Thank you. My name is Ember.”

Chapter 2

Sabrine woke to the songs of the birds and believed last night might have been a dream but then when she turned to her side she saw Ember, the girl they had rescued. Sabrine sat for a while pondering on whether or not to trust Ember because she seemed very cautious of everything and didn’t say much when they were at the fire. Her thoughts were interrupted by the sounds of her friend Kevin waking up. “Hey, had a good rest Sabrine?” “Yes, I did.” Kevin came closer and settled down next to her. “Morning. I was thinking can you help me find this door? It’s sorta like an elevator door.” “Like that?” Kevin said pointing to the ridge. Ember’s eyes widened and gave a small nod. “You know how to open it Ember so, what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”

Chapter 3

Ember opened the door by just wiping this blue gem across the ridge from right to left. For a few moments nothing happened but then the ridge opened just like and elevator door as Ember had described. They gasped in wonder as the door opened. Behind the door was a beautiful lush green forest and you could see light rays streaming through the green leaves. The forest looked so perfect that it seemed like it was part of a dream. “What do you need to do?” Sabrine asked. “I need to find this stone circle. I think my family left a message there…” “Well that’s very important then! Come on let’s search right now.” Kevin decided. While we were walking we began to make jokes and it seemed they had been friends for years yet only two days before they were strangers. Just as Ember began a joke; they found the place they’d been looking for. The floor was thick with soil and leaves but you could make out the stone and around them so many different patterned pillars around them. There seemed no point or pattern to it all but Ember found a carved message on one of the pillars.
Ye, who are reading this text, let it be known that ye are one of the chosen, whom shall be chosen to leave our forest. Nay do not be alarmed! We may have thought being alone is good but no more! Ye must find help and seal this place from greedy eyes. Ye shall be the last of our kind. Be safe and pass-on the stone so that when the time is right and mankind is kinder, tell your children to open the door.

“Well, what shall we do now?” Sabrine asked carefully “Well no one will believe us and any adult who sees the truth will take the fame for them-selves. Also the people of this time are selfish, greedy and mean surely we have been sent at the wrong time!” Kevin exclaimed. “I do agree with you, but let us still let people enjoy this beautiful land.” Ember suggested. “Or maybe, I know this is selfish but: maybe we could raise our own tribe, family right here. Teach our children how to be kind and loving and how not to be greedy. What do you think of that?” Sabrine stated shyly “Wonderful, an absolutely ingenious idea!” Ember exclaimed.
